How to beat the AT-ST
The AT-ST is the card the community complains about most. It has the health of a building, walks straight at your turret and players joke that it "has no counters". It does. The game's own card text even tells you what beats it. Here's the full answer, with the numbers.
Card numbers come from the game's own data tables at base level 1. Advice mixes that data with what players on the SWFAR Discord report is working right now.
Why the AT-ST feels unbeatable
AT-ST Walker7 energy, 4,242 HP- 7 energy, 4,242 HP, tech unit. That is more health than most turrets, in one card.
- It targets structures. It walks toward your turret and deals high damage to buildings, so ignoring it loses you a turret.
- Ranged units can't keep up. Your shooters chip at it while it walks through them.
- The game's own description says it is defenseless against large numbers of melee enemies and does best when paired with area damage. Remember that line: it is the whole counter.
The best answers
| Card | Cost | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
Talz Marauder Army | 4 | Nine melee Talz swarm the walker. It can only shoot so many, and 4 energy for a 7 energy card is a winning trade. |
Twi'lek Rebels | 1 | Four melee attackers for one energy. The cheapest distraction in the game. |
Talz Marauders | 2 | Three melee units with good health for two energy. |
Rebel Honor Guards | 4 | Four tough melee guards who chew through it. |
Riot Clone Troopers | 3 | Shielded melee clones. They don't take damage until the shield breaks. |
Rebel Demolitionist | 3 | Only attacks vehicles, heavy units and structures, with 437 attack. Built for exactly this job. |
Resistance Grenadier | 4 | Grenades stun tech units. A stunned AT-ST is a free target. |
Chopper (Hera) | 2 | Electric attacks stun tech units. |
BB-8 (Poe) | 3 | Hacks enemy tech units to fight for you. Players forget it can steal an AT-ST. |
Commander Cody (Obi-Wan) | 5 | Summons rocket clones when he sees a heavy unit or vehicle. |
How to play the matchup
- Let it walk to you. Don't meet the AT-ST in the middle. Let it walk into your turret's range so your turret helps.
- Melee first, then ranged. Drop a melee swarm on top of it. While it is busy, your Demolitionist or ranged units finish it from behind.
- Kill its support. AT-STs are usually paired with area damage or a leader like Snoke. Air strike the support so your melee swarm survives.
- Count the energy. They spent 7. If you answer with 4 or less, you are ahead, so counter-push the other lane immediately.
- Keep one cheap melee card in hand. Twi'lek Rebels or Talz Marauders cost almost nothing to hold for when the walker lands.
Playing against it on the Dark Side
- The AT-ST is Dark Side only, but Dark Side players face it in mirror matches, Arcade and Friendly Matches.
- Riot Control Stormtroopers and Devaronian Bladesmen are the cheap melee answers, and Zabrak Assassins strike it from stealth.
- Rocket Stormtrooper is the Dark Side Demolitionist: it only attacks heavy units and structures.
Is a nerf coming?
Some SWFAR Discord players want the AT-ST toned down, others think it is only a problem because Light Side units need buffs and that on the Dark Side it is not a big deal. The Reborn team has not announced a change. Track balance updates on the What's new page, and see the Snoke and AT-ST counter guide for its most annoying pairing.
